Noting serious in this post. Just a South Dakota Joke

Subject: Gods country

A man decided to write a book about churches around the
country.He started by flying to San Francisco, and started
working east from there.

Going to a very large church, he began taking photographs
andmaking notes. He spotted a golden telephone on the
vestibule wall and was intrigued with a sign which read "$10,000 a minute."
Seeking out the pastor he asked about the phone and the sign. The pastor
answered that this golden phone is, in fact, a direct line to
Heaven and if he pays the price he can talk directly to God. The man thanked
the pastor and continued on his way.

As he continued to visit churches in Seattle, Austin,
Phoenix, Denver, and Kansas City, he found more phones, with the same sign,
and received the same answer from each pastor.

Finally, he arrived in South Dakota. Upon entering a
church in Mitchell, South Dakota behold, he saw the usual golden
telephone. But THIS time, the sign read "Calls 25 cents."

Fascinated, he asked to talk to the pastor. "Reverend, I
have been in cities all across the country and in each church I have
found this golden telephone and have been told it is a direct line to
Heaven and that I could talk to God, but, in the other churches the cost was
$10,000 a minute. Your sign reads 25 cents a call. Why?"

The pastor, smiling benignly, replied, "Son, you're in
SOUTH DAKOTA now....it's a local call."

Ya, I know you knew that was the punchline. I suppose this thing
has been in every rural state in the US several times.

R & J Shoveling snow and snow is a godsend and other bullshit pleasantries.

R. Would you support repeal of fed inheritance tax?
J. Doesn't know what he would do and has no idea of what a $100 Billion cut in fed
revenue would do. Big problem in SD for budget was repeal of state inheritance tax.
Nobody anticipated problems and costs resulting from Sept 11.

R What are your priorities if in Congress?
J. Can't deal with federal problems at state level. Feds talk about saving soc. sec and
making medicine affordable. Ethanol problem. 30 states are funding. Should be a national
priority if 30 states doing it. ((((( How does that apply to Internet tax-- see followup post))))
Janklow goes to bed sick thinking that some shiek or emir can turn US economy upside down.
Why isn't US fed govt taking care of Canadian imports. France restricts US imports. The French
cheat and we don't do anything about it at fed level.
Do more on stopping Black Hills Fires. Something needs to be done to make those progrmas
work to save forests. Feds should put money into special education. The feds defined the
standards but is not fulfilling promises on supporting it. Finally, the federal land, forests,
Army Corp of Engineers land, etc should be paying property taxes. That is the Janklow agenda
if he goes to DC.
Curt in RC. refers to Letter to Ed by Bill Napoli. About Janklow. Is Janklow autocratic? etc.

J. Janklow has been a fighter for his "clients". Fighting as AG at Pork Plant. Janklow involved
in shootout at Pine Ridge. Saved the railroad. Fought for West River Pipeline. Fighting to
keep the reading program. Democrats tried to kill immunizations, etc.Janklow had to fight them.
Janklow says he called Napoli untruthful. Nailed him in a meeting at Gov's mansion.
Janklow says he got $1000 check from elder Bush so obviously he can work effectively in DC.
Working on Neutrino lab. Am track ...Janklow Bush and Rumsfeld are personal friends, etc

R Will these people come out and campaign?
J. Tom Ridge, Tommy Thompson, etc. Janklow will take them on Motorcyle drive. Does not want them
campaigning for him, because he should be able to win on his own.
J Would not ask Pres to come out and campaign for him. Does not want "surrogates" to campaign for
him.

Bob from Hermosa Do you plan to support funding to terrorist drug raisers? ((((Newland is probably
referring to the $45 million the ever-minor bush admin dumped into the Taliban prior to Sept 11))))

R. Talking with Bill Janklow as candidate. Talking about terrorism. Do you think we should go into
Iraq?.
J All Janklow knows is what he hears on the news. but can't believe that. We should go anyplace
in the world where people are threatening to kill innocent women, children, etc. I Sad. H had anyting
to do with anthrax and terrorism, go after him. If facts are such that he is a threat to Human beings,
go after him. Weapons of mass destruction?
R But, you believe he is a threat, etc.

R Everybody talks about high drug prices...any solutions?.
J Janklow does not have a specific idea. Prescription drug idea is multi-sided. He is always attacked
for fighting for the people. ((((( Paranoia???? ))))) Companies should be able to get return on
investment and patent protection, etc. But, he wants to get laws changed so that companies can't diddle
with drugs to maintain patents and prevent generic medicines. Wants discount for plain citizens paying
for drugs. Need a system that prevents multiple prices. Citizens should get a discount. Six prices,etc.

R. Too much paperwork?
J. Can't let drug companies exploit people

R. How is your health?
J Good
R How good?
J Just said it was good. Need to lose weight. For a man 63 years old, everybody who knows him will agree
he has boundless energy and enthusiasm.

R. Would you really ride around campaigning with Pressler?

J. Janklow said he would and would also go around door-to-door. But no ads then added Pressler. Janklow
would not do it if ads banned. J has less time because of governors job, but more energy than Pressler, so
he expects to win and drag his boundless energy to DC.
R Janklow is Republican. Against Abortion?

J. Janklow against abortion

R. What about operation Candyman?. Sexual predators, etc?.

J. Janklow says SD on forefront of the anti sexual predator,etc. Office set up under Bill Mickelson? and
three others. Have most sophisticated devices for scanning computers and hard drives. Janklow pretended
that he was young child in chat room. Got terrible responses from sexual predators in the chat rooms, etc.
(((( Of course, Janklow could pretend he was an adult and get terrible responses in a political forum)))))

Have $1Million grant from feds by work of Daschle to make a program unrivaled by any other state in going
after "these folks". Going to give them trials and lock them up.((( Why even bother with the trials then??)))

What about Legalization of equal rights for gays and lesbians?

J. Does not believe in Same-sex marriages. Believes in 5th and 14th amendments. Equal rights civil rights and
civil liberties. God made everybody in the lord's image so we all have same obligations and rights and we should
all be equal in the eyes of the lord and of the law. (((((( interesting implication here. Perhaps Janklow's god is not
actually just more money and power, but a multi-person gay and lesbian deity dressed in J. Edgar Hoover's dress
sitting infront of Liberace's piano handling snakes and editing the Koran again ))))))

R. Committee assignments?

J. Speculation is dumb.
R. Why don't you speculate? (((( Vicious question probes deeply ))))
J. Ok Ag, interior,for BIA, Appropriations, Ways and Means. No bad committees, but would not want to be on
something like bank committee, but many others. Commerce but would prefer Ways and means.
Janklow has never had any trouble getting along with people in Washington. Priveat meeting with Vaneman and Norton
and six other governors. Quiet diplomacy with bureaucrats. Janklow personally got Babbitt and Ag sec to
meet during the Clitnon ad at Salt Lake City.
Dick Cheney, ever-minor Bush, helped Bush get fair vote in Florida, bush on transistion team. Andy Card used to wor
work with Debbie Anderson. Mitch Daniels and Janklow worked together in Reagan administration. Something improtantd,
but agreed not to talk about it in SD

R. Long list of accomplishments. What might you wish you have done.

J. Good question. Hindsight. Could look backward and find some better way, but every thing came so fast he could n
have planning sessions etc. Tornadoes, etc. ((((((( Janklow the political fireman )))) Most disappointed in
not having the opportunity to have influence on the federal governent to help solve the state problems. ((((( seems
somewhat contradictory to being able to get so much done in Washington already ))))

Medical costs go up so much. If he could have done something different, it would have been that and on educations.

Too much finger-pointing,etc.(((((((((( I suppose the record will show that Janklow support Hillary Clinton's attemt
to stimulate a single-provider system, etc. But, I do wonder how much of the $887,000 he has laying in a campaign chest
came from HMO's, medical insurers, doctors, chiropractors, dentists, Mexican Cement Plants, etc....))))))))))

J. Pub radio and TV primary way Janklow has been able to get to the people. Forums like this that are unplanned and a
allow people to ask questions. Janklow called in and contributed $150 ...he wanted 50's groups CDS. Did
not do it for publicity. ((( Of course it wasn't for publicity, he just wanted the CD bonuses. Got a bridge in
Brooklyn for sale to. Make him an offer...he did sell the cement plant and converted a college into a prison)))))

J. Always supported publ TV etc. But opposes public radio tv supporting particular candidates. Worked to make
sure studio in Vermillion was best of all possible studios, etc.

R. Newsdirector says current funding discussions at fed level are problems for urban stations rather than
rural systems like South Dakota's..

Caller did not catch name or location...Know anything about the Bray or Brey case? He sued chain stores in San Francisco. Brey case was put together
by ranchers in SD, Nb, Mn etc sued chain stores for price fixing. Appeals court said injured 3rd parties can not
sue. Will Janklow work to amend laws so that individuals can sue? Janklow contributed state money? to beekeeprs,
cattlemens R-Calf fight on importing gov. subsidized beef. Janklow took off after Canadians. Forced Glickman to
get involved and got changes in NAFTA. Janklow has been outspoken in opposing packing plants owning livestock.
Supports amending laws to prevent price fixing in anyway shape or form.
